At Buttershaw, we strongly believe that partnerships between business and the education sector are key to ensuring students learn the necessary skills for the jobs of the future. Some of our more recent activities are outlined below:

In communities – Junior GEM programme

After a rigorous application process, several of our post -16 students were accepted onto this business led innovative and engaging programme. Each student completes the one year course with Incommunities staff alongside their current AS choices. They complete E- learning modules and coursework, participate in classroom teaching and experience job shadowing and sector specific workshops. Their personal business mentors guide them throughout the programme. After being awarded their Chartered Institute of Housing Level 3 qualification, each student participates in a two week work placement with Incommunities, in an area of their own choice.

Subject area links

Most of our subject areas have business partner interaction. These can include motivational talks, Skype sessions, industry insight days, career discussions and interactive face to face sessions. Our industry experts also explain some of the more complex elements of the students’ learning and how these are applied in the workplace.

The Institute of Grocery Distribution worked with a group of our Year 7 students recently. Some of the student comments are below:

U K Careers Academy – Personal Finance

This two year programme runs alongside students’ current AS choices. After an employer led application and interview process, the successful students gain access into sector specific workshops, guru lectures, visits, residentials, personal business mentors and paid internships. Our partners include the CII, Yorkshire Bank Plc, Provident Financial Services, Bradford Breakthrough, KPMG, PwC and Deloitte UK.

Work Placements

Insight into the world of work is often found through work placements and at BBEC we are committed to providing a variety of experiences for our post-16 students. Through our business partner relationships, we currently have a diverse and varied number of placements within, for example, finance, housing, horticulture, NHS, Whitehall, Yorkshire Water, HR, teaching and the legal sectors.

Career Fairs

We are committed to ensuring that every student can develop high aspirations and consider a broad and ambitious range of careers. We currently run two annual events, one for Year 8 students which our FLP primary school Year 6 students also attend, and an evening event for our Year 11-13 students and parent/guardians. Each cater for all levels of academic ability, are interactive and have a minimum of 35 businesses in attendance. Students learn about the variety of jobs currently in the workplace and the career pathways available in order to gain access to them. The students complete interactive quizzes to find careers best suited to their current skills and the older students also participate in high calibre, sector specific presentations.

Year group programmes

In addition to selected cohorts of students, we also run whole/part year group programmes. For example, we have established a valuable and sustainable partnership with a local business provider, Yorkshire Water. Recently, we ran an extremely successful whole year group programme, consisting of an application process, teamwork and problem solving sessions and interviews. 6 students successfully gained work placements within the company. Yorkshire Water colleagues have also led staff training programmes, community cohesion activities, student mentor programmes and we currently have Yorkshire Water staff on our board of governors and CE: ET project board.


We are committed to retaining our links with our alumni and they regularly participate in school activities. Recently, at our academy launch evening, one of our alumni guest speakers who works in New Zealand as a Volcanic Claims Consultant gave an invigorating talk via Skype. The audience erupted!

Governing Body

We recognise the advantages of having an employer representation on our school governing body, with responsibility for helping to provide our young people with direct exposure to the world of work.
